Raw cashew nut in shell is a kidney shaped nut (grown at the bottom of a cashew fruit) with hard outer shell. Colour varies from light green to light brown.

The cashew seed (kernel) is a tree nut in the culinary sense. On its own it can be a snack, processed into cashew cheese or butter, cashew milk and used in cooking lip snacking vegetables, sweets specially in Indian subcontinent & all over the world.

The seed, its shell and the fruit have many uses. The shell for example has uses in the production of lubricants, paints and water proofing. The fruit can be fermented into fruit drinks and liquor. The cashew tree is native to Brazil, and the cultivation spread to India and eventually Southeast Asia and Africa. India and Vietnam are major processors of raw cashew nut and exporters of Cashew kernels around the globe. The largest cashew tree in the world is located in Natal, Brazil covering an area of around 7,500 m2 (81,000 sq ft)
